Mr Callum Downes

Doctoral candidate in Department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology, University of Exeter.

Specialist research areas:

Contemporary far right fringe groups in England; social and political marginalisation of far right supporters; social media’s response to the far right phenomena.

Callum’s doctoral research focuses on the epistemic marginalisation of contemporary far right political groups in England. By utilising Miranda Fricker’s theory of epistemic injustice from her text Epistemic Injustice: Power and the Ethics of Knowing, Callum aims to identify whether individuals who belong to or identify with contemporary far right political groups are epistemically marginalised, and if such marginalisation is occurring whether this is an injustice that should be resolved or whether it is a pragmatic benefit for society. In order to address this research topic he will adopt an interdisciplinary approach of philosophical and social scientific methodology, by undertaking in a comprehensive review of philosophical and sociological literature on the topic and by conducting qualitative and quantitative research on society’s opinion of far right supporters and the opinion of individuals who belong to/ identify with far right political groups.
