The aim of the MA in Terrorism, Security and Radical Right Extremism – starting this fall – a collaboration between the Centre for the Analysis of the Radical Right (CARR) and Richmond, the American International University in London – is to equip students with an in-depth knowledge of the theories, debates and practical issues associated with radical-right extremism, allowing students to gain the analytical and research skills as well as an opportunity to get practical work experience in security, counter-extremism and journalistic industries.
The Curriculum
Working closely with a team of internationally recognized experts in their field, the MA in Terrorism, Security and Radical Right Extremism prepares students for further graduate study in the discipline of security and terrorism studies. It is also for careers in the world of local, national, regional, and international security, counter-terrorism and counter-extremism, and in governmental and non-governmental organisations.
The degree can lead to eventual careers in roles that require articulate, clear thinking individuals with a grasp of contemporary debates and approaches towards the particularly thorny issue of radical-right extremism; these include government, security organisations, technology companies, policing and the media. We offer a rigorous curriculum encompassing theoretical and practical developments in the dynamic field of security, terrorism and radical-right extremism studies. All of this is set in the vibrant context of cosmopolitan London, in an international university where students come from over 60 different nations, and which gives graduates distinct advantages in developing vital inter-personal and intercultural communication skills.
The programme examines a range of theories and approaches to security, terrorism and radical-right extremism, questions of ideology, politics and counter-extremist responses, and offers courses on Insurgency, Civil War, and Terrorism. The aim of the programme is to equip students with in-depth knowledge of the security challenges posed by radical-right extremism, key analytical and research skills, together with an opportunity to gain practical experience in industry through an optional internship – with the below intern partners (see Appendix A) (Subject to Availability).
